Spring walk 2026 Conwy, Wales.
4/6/2026 - 8/6/2026
Thursday 4th June.
Travel day. We got off to a bad start as there had been a vehicle fire between junctions 14 and 15 on the M1 causing a 40 minute delay. After we cleared that it was plain sailing until we hit heavy rain, lots of surface water. Once we cleared that no further problems. We bumped into several others at Keele services whilst stopping for a pit stop. Then on to the lunch time meet at the Boot Inn at Boothsdale. A very good and welcoming house.
After lunch and refreshments we went for a warm up walk. All started together but split after a while some just going to the Farmers Arms at Kelsall others doing a longer walk. All met back at the Boot before driving on to the hostel at Chester, Trafford Hall. John S had to go back as he left his hat on a bollard by his car.
Dinner was taken at the Chester Fields, very limited menu as most things were off, noisy and a service charge on everything. Will not recommend or be returning.
Those present were Dick, Paul, Ralph, John S, Andy, Pete, John W, Mick, Ian, Graham, Pat and Steve
Friday 5th June.
We woke up to a fine but windy morning, though there was some cloud it stayed fine all day. After breakfast we drove to Prestatyn parking by the Nova Centre. Various walks were undertaken. All set off on the coast path going east towards Gronant where Pat, Ian and Dick walked back along the cycle way to Prestatyn.
Andy and Pete took a lower route across the hills via the Gronant Inn at Gronant but their luck was out, it didn't open until 3pm! They carried on to Prestatyn for a couple of beers at The William Morgan. It wasn't long before the others, Paul, Ralph, John S, Steve, John W, Mick and Graham, also arrived at The William Morgan, they had walked the higher route over the hills via the Eagle and Child at Gwaenysgor before returning to Prestatyn.
An uneventful walk apart from Steve leaving his pole at a rest stop and having to return to find it, luckily it was still there. Once we had all gathered it was on to the Hostel at Conwy where Phil met us, having come up by train.
After a wash and change we headed for the Erskine Arms for dinner some though went to a chippy as there was a lack of tables, but they were able to eat their food at a pub next door, outside, as long as they bought a beer. What a hardship. Then it was on to The Albion before returning to the hostel and retiring for the evening.
Saturday 6th June.
We woke up to a cloudy morning, there having been some overnight rain. It stayed fine despite the odd spot of rain, though windy at times.
After a good breakfast we got the bus to Llandudno. Some walked to the Tram station and got the tram up to the top of The Great Orme before returning to Conwy via the coast path. Others walked around the Great Orme, up to the cafe at summit, then back down stopping at the Kings Head by the Tram Station for refreshments. Whilst they were in the pub Ian came down on the tram and they all cheered him. Ralph had managed to lose his hat and had to replace it. Most had refreshment in moderation to save themselves for the evening getting the bus back. However Steve and John S stayed drinking Abbot though it did affect their balance. After leaving the pub John wanted a battered sausage but was upset because it was only a small one. Before getting the bus back they just managed to refrain from another one at Wetherspoons whilst waiting for the bus. Pete was looking for evening food options and missed a kerb falling over but didn't hurt himself, only his pride.
Once back at the hostel and a wash and change it was into town for refreshment (Tapps) and dinner. Various options were taken, some managed to get into an Indian restaurant, some had fish and chips others got an Indian takeaway to take back to the hostel to eat.
Sunday 7th June.
We woke up to another overcast morning, there had been overnight rain but the sun came out after breakfast. It stayed fine all day only raining in the evening.
Again we split up into several groups. Phil got a bus to Aber to go to a waterfall before returning by bus to the Marina at Conwy. Dick, Pat and Pete set off on a walk around the town walls past the castle and along the estuary to the Marina, Pete dropped off the walk in town as his hip was aching after the tumble he took on the previous day. Dick and Pat made it to the Marina, via the coast path, finding a pub called The Mulberry which served beer from 10:30. Though it was nearer to 11:30 thought it was rude not to but in doing so ended up doing a Steve and John. The view and beer (Trooper) were great. Ian walked from the hostel following a guide, meeting Pat and Dick for lunch before continuing his walk along the coast path. Pat and Dick returned to the hostel again by the coast path into town and up the hill once suitably refreshed.
The others started from the hostel to go up Conwy Mountain via Mount Pleasant, North Wales Path, Cambrian Way, Allt Wen to Echo Rock where Andy, Steve and John S left to go to Capelulo for a drink (they had to wait until 12:00 though) at the Fairy Glen Hotel. The others carried on to Maen Esgob, Warn Gyrach, Foel Lus and down to the Gladstone at Dwygyfylchi meeting Andy, Steve and John S before getting the bus back to Conwy. Getting to go to the Mulberry and walk back along the cost path into town and on up to the hostel.
Evening dinner was booked at the Erskine but we called in at The Bank of Conwy for a drink on the way. After dinner we had one more in the Bank before returning to the Hostel to raise a toast to absent friends. It had started to rain on the way back to the hostel, luckily apart from a few drops it had been the first rain we had seen all weekend.
Monday 8th June.
The weather did not look very promising so most decided to go home straight after breakfast. For most it stayed fine for a while until on the M1 where the heavens opened but cleared once back home. Phil however had a delay caused by an incident at Flint which meant there were no trains running for some time.
