Autumn Walk October 2026 Sheringham, 1/10/2026 - 5/10/2026

Thursday 1st October.

Travel day. We met at the Cricketers in Aldborough for lunch and a circular walk taking in part of the Weavers Way. Those present were Ralph, Paul, Dick, John, Mick, Ben, Pat, Steve, Andy, Graham, Pete and Ian. On the way to the Inn we had seen a church with a round tower, saying that's unusual. Later during the walk we passed the church and found out round towers were common in Norfolk. In the village there was a garage that had lots of old motorbikes.

After the walk we made our way to the Hostel at Sheringham, our base for the weekend. Once settled it was out for dinner at the Two Lifeboats, then on to The Lobster where we managed a quick drink before they closed just after 10:00pm. As we walked back to the hostel the town was dead. The weather had been fine and sunny all day but cooled in the evening.

Friday 2nd October.

After breakfast various options were taken by people. Dick and Pat set off to walk along the Coast path to Cromer but got off to a bad start missing the Coast path ending up walking along the beach to West Runton before rejoining the path along the cliff top into Cromer (luckily the tide was falling so could progress. They also saw a dead seal).

Pete and Ian got the bus to meet the others at lunchtime. The rest walked from the hostel up to Roman Camp (highest point in Norfolk) to meet up at lunchtime at the Red Lion. Mick had placed his bag on the ground whilst they had a break and was told to be careful when picking it up as there was a wasp nest by it.

After lunch Pete, Pat and Dick got the bus to West Runton. Ian went straight to Sheringham. The rest walked to West Runton meeting up with the others in the Village Inn. The drink went to Ben's head causing him to fall off his seat whilst there. John met a friend there (Kevin) and walked back to Sheringham with him, Steve, Andy, and Ben. On the way all but Andy stopped at the Fishmongers Inn for a quick one as he was meeting an old friend later, however they ended up staying there for the rest of the evening as there was chap playing music. He was very good.

The others took the Coast path back. Roland and Phil met us at the hostel.

After a wash and brush up all went to the Fishmongers for dinner. This turned out to be a good move as there was a meal deal on mains, buy 2 and get the cheaper one for a pound. The food and beer was all good also.

It was a great, sun shining all day, light winds with no rain.

Saturday 3rd October.

We woke up to a cloudy morning, though it stayed fine with sunny intervals but cooler than previous days.

After a quick breakfast Paul and Graham went to do a park run. The Park run delayed Paul and Graham, causing them to miss the bus the others were on so Phil, Paul and Graham got the next bus to Weybourne. The rest stayed at the hostel for a more leisurely start to the day before getting a bus, some to Weybourne others to Blakeney apart from Pete who went on a seal boat trip and Ralph who stayed at the hostel with a bad foot.

Pat, Dick and Ian got the bus to Blakeney before walking back to Cley to meet the others for lunch at The George and Dragon. The rest walked along the coast path from Weybourne to Cley, seeing a twitcher on the way they asked what was about. He told them it was a spotted Red Shank, he had been there for 4hrs to see it and they just turn up!!!

All met at George and Dragon for lunch. Pete took Ian, Pat and Dick back to the hostel. The rest carried on the coast path to Blakeney to get the bus back, stopping at The Kings Arms for a quick one where Ralph met them. Ralph brought Ben back as he is the only one without a bus pass. The rest walked to the bus stop to return back to the hostel apart from Roland who got off the bus at Weybourne to get the train back. Then it was down to the CIU club to watch England play football against Croatia (7-0 to England).

Fish and chips were the meal choice for the day, some made it to Dave's before it closed (very good). Then it was on to the Robin Hood for after dinner drinks. On the way to dinner the music had sounded good but when we got there it was the worst tribute Blondie group ever, though the singer was from Bristol!!

Sunday 4th October.

We woke up to another fine sunny day, occasional cloudy and little wind. After breakfast various options taken.

Ian spent the day on the train. Pat and Dick walked along the coast path to Weybourne meeting Pete by the beach before walking up to the Ship Inn. The rest walked to Upper Sheringham, Sheringham Park, the Gazebo, Weybourne station where Steve and Andy walked directly to the Ship. Just as well as a couple of wrong turns were made by the others which added a couple of extra ‘Keechy Miles’ to their walk before they found their way to the coast and then back to meet the others in the Ship Inn.

Andy met his friend and got a lift back, in his classic car, a 1960 Hillman Minx convertible and Pete, Pat and Dick got the bus back as did Roland later. The rest walked back.

Ralph and Steve had an early dinner in The Bank (a Nepalese restaurant), as they were going to see Malcolm Mills (an old BT colleague) in Fakenham. The rest went down a bit later for their meal, very good but a bit dear. After dinner drinks were taken at the Robin Hood then back to the Hostel for a toast to absent friends.

Monday 5th October.

We woke up to another fine and sunny day. After breakfast some went straight home others took a walk down to the seafront before returning to the hostel and cars to go home. It had been a great weekend with fantastic weather.
