Spring Walk, June 2013, Boggle Hole & Whitby, 6/06/2013 - 10/06/2013

Thursday 6th June.

Travel day no major problems on the way up but some delays around Howard House. Although there was some rain on the way up it was fine sunny and hot for the afternoon. We had arranged to meet at Cloughton at the Hayburn Wyke Inn for lunch and light refreshments. Then we proceeded for a warm up walk for the weekend activities, this was out to the coast path ( Cleveland Way ) up as far as Ravenscar, then taking the disused railway back to Cloughton and the cars. Once back to the cars we went onto the night’s accommodation the YHA Hostel at Boggle Hole where Pete Tompson joined us.

The start of the walk

The hostel was set up on a nautical theme with plenty of activities for children, good for us as well, especially for school parties. We sorted out our rooms wash and changed before walking to Robins Hood Bay to the Bay Hotel for food ( not recommended ). Whilst we were eating the warden of the hostel came to find Paul and whispered sweet words in his ear. It turned out there was a problem with the accommodation and that some people would have to move, however they would move everything including the beds. This in fact was better for them as they were all on a bottom bunk, the floor, and had much more room. We then moved on to The Dolphin where we were entertained by local musicians and then the Laurel Leaves. John W had found the day’s activities too much so he was forced to study the inside of his eyelids for some time.

When it was time to return we went back along the beach as the tide was out, most made it ok a couple of wet feet but Pat managed to trip over a couple of times.

Friday 7th June.

We woke up to a fine clear day with plenty of sunshine. Then down to breakfast.

Whilst at breakfast the Wardress came and whispered in Pauls ear again, we did not think anything of this until later, Paul was the last one out of the hostel, even Ian beat him, when he did join us he appeared with his poles and a very light pack. We all wondered what had been occurring?

Robin Hood bay

The days walk was along the Cleveland Way ( coast path ) to the Ravenscar Hotel for a tea break, then along the disused railway to the Victoria Hotel at the top of Robins Hood Bay for lunch. The views from the garden across the bay showing all of the days walk were great, the food and ale was good too much better than the previous evenings meal. John W however did have one complaint he did not get any chutney with his sandwich.

Pete T met us for tea and lunch as he was cycling. Then it was back to the cars and on to Whitby Hostel. John Stopani joined us there. Roland met us at the top of the 199 steps.

Whitby Hostel was in the old Abbey House a very grand place for a hostel. Once beds made and we were cleaned and refreshed it was down to the Black Horse to settle the dust from the days walking. As it was Friday we went for fish and chips some at Granby’s and others at Rxxxxx by the station before all meeting at the Station Hotel for some more dust settler before going back to the Hostel up the 199 steps.

Saturday 8th June.

We woke up to cloud and a cooler day good for walking as long as it stayed fine, which it did, the sun finally coming out around 16:00.

Grosmont station

A difference of routes today Dick and Richard went on the coast path from Whitby to Robins Hood Bay and refreshment at the Victoria Hotel before going back on the disused railway for the late lunch time stop The Hare and Hounds at Hawkser. Pete had a puncture to mend on his bike so went to Hawser on the Bus. The others got the train to Grosmont then walked back across the moors to Hawkser.

En route to Hawkser

Pete had given up seeing anyone at Hawkser and was leaving when Dick and Richard turned up so stayed a bit longer, the rest turned up later still saying they had been delayed in a tea shop but had also had problems finding the path in places. After refreshment some went back on the bus the rest went back along the coast path to the hostel.

Outside a Hermits home

It turned out well that some had gone back on the bus as they found out about a good Indian restaurant in Whitby, most decided to go there for a meal. After a wash and brush up it was off out to find the Indian stopping at a couple of watering holes on the way. The Indian was very small and did not sell drink but all was not lost as you could bring your own and there was an off licence not far away. On the way back we called in at the Angel Hotel ( a Weatherspoon’s ) which was very noisy and the Duke of York. During the night much of the talk had been about pensions as Pete had just retired, this proved too taxing for John S who sat back and let it all go over his head.

We woke up to another cloudy day but fine. After an early breakfast it was down to the bus station to get a bus to Staithes so that we could pick up the Cleveland way ( coast path ) and walk back to Whitby. Staithes was a pleasant place but it did not allow cars and buses into the village, you could understand why as you walked down into it. We stopped for tea at the Runswick Bay beach cafe, a bad move as it turned out. After leaving the cafe we walked across the beach then had to go up a lot of steps to get back to the top of the cliff unfortunately it was only single file and we had to follow a group of women ramblers who thought they could multi task by talking and climbing at the same time. On this occasion they were proved wrong as progress was slow and they could not talk much the higher they went. Once the top was reached we managed to get away from them and could again hear the sounds of the country side.

Lunch was taken at The Hart Inn at Sandsend crab sandwiches all round. Some got the bus back from here (John S bade his farwells) the rest carried on along the beach to Whitby as we arrived back in Whitby the sun came out to cap another fine days walking.

After ablutions it was out for dinner some to an Italian Dick and Roland tried to go to Granby’s but it was closed so went back to Rxxx before joining the others in The Endeavour for after dinner drinks where we were entertained by local singers ( the Landlord ) Ian then got up and led us in the Lumberjack song and a couple of others. Ian has a very fine voice.

Monday 10st June.

Again a cloudy day but it kept fine which was the main thing.Roland & Pete bade their farwells.

After breakfast we drove to Cropton for a circular walk around the New Inn staying there for lunch before driving home. No problems were encountered another fine weekend.

These stepping stones were very slipery (Pat fell in!)
